What I Wish I Knew Before Veneers (From a Cosmetic Dentist)

Woman Smiling And Showing Veneers Options

If you are thinking about porcelain veneers, this guide is for you. I am a cosmetic dentist at Norman Family Dentistry in Norman, OK. Our mission is to build relationships based on mutual trust and create healthy, beautiful smiles in a comfortable, kind setting. We bring 130+ years of combined experience and invest in modern technology to plan predictable results.

10 things I tell every patient before veneers

  1. Veneers are not your only option
Sometimes whitening, bonding, clear aligners, or ultra‑thin Lumineers can meet your goals with less prep and cost. We offer all of these, so we can compare them side by side at your consult.
  2. Preparation is conservative but permanent
We often remove a very small amount of enamel so the porcelain sits flush and looks natural. You should love the plan before we begin, which is why we preview shape and shade first.
  3. Whitening does not change porcelain
Bleaching brightens natural teeth, not veneers. We usually whiten surrounding teeth first, then match your porcelain to that brighter shade for a seamless look. (It is a small step that helps a lot.)
  4. Your gums matter
Healthy gums frame a great smile. Over the years, mild gum recession can expose the edge where veneer meets tooth. Good home care and routine cleanings help keep margins smooth and discreet.
  5. Bite and habits affect longevity
Porcelain is strong, yet grinding, nail‑biting, and opening packages with your teeth can chip edges. If you clench at night, we will likely recommend a custom nightguard to protect your investment.
  6. You may have a temporary phase
Between preparation and delivery, we sometimes place comfortable provisionals so you can test length and shape. This “test drive” lets us fine‑tune before the final ceramics are bonded.
  7. Expect simple maintenance
Brush gently, floss daily, and keep up with cleanings. Avoid very abrasive toothpaste. If you drink dark liquids often, use a straw and rinse with water after.
  8. Technology improves the fit and the feel
Digital scans and modern milling systems help us design precise, lifelike veneers while keeping visits efficient and comfortable. Our tools include iTero, CEREC/PrimeMill, Biolase Waterlase, and STA for more comfortable numbing.
  9. Comfort options are available
If you are anxious, we can discuss sedation. For complex cases, we even reserve dedicated general anesthesia time on Fridays when appropriate.
  10. Plan the budget before you start
We will review fees up front and map out a timeline. We accept major cards, offer payment options, and have an in‑house savings plan for patients without insurance.

How we plan veneers at Norman Family Dentistry

  • Comprehensive consult: Photos, a 3D scan, and a conversation about your goals.
  • Side‑by‑side options: Porcelain veneers, Lumineers, Invisalign, bonding, and whitening reviewed together so you can choose the least invasive plan that meets your goals.
  • Expert team and values: We pair advanced tech with a warm, boutique experience and give back about 10% of profits to local youth programs each year.
